SugarDid you Know? Raw sugar is produced from sugarcane in three Australian states; almost 95 per cent in Queensland, around five per cent in New South Wales (NSW) and 0.7 per cent in Western Australia (WA). There are 26 raw sugar mills in Queensland (including one mill that processes sugarcane to syrup stage only), three in NSW and one in WA. Australia is currently one of the world's largest exporters of raw sugar, with Queensland exporting about 80 to 85 per cent of its total raw sugar production. Almost 100 percent of raw sugar exports originate in Queensland. Sugarcane is crushed in 30 Australian mills KEY STATISTICS • Sugar is Australia's second-largest export crop, after wheat, with total annual revenue of almost $2 billion. • Around 95% of sugar produced in Australia is grown in QLD, with the remainder in northern NSW. • Australia exports 80%-85% of its raw sugar to buyers overseas, making it the second-largest raw sugar exporter in the world. • The sugar industry generates more than 40,000 jobs, directly and indirectly. Sugar in Australia is sourced from sugar cane. Most Australian sugar cane is grown on family-owned and operated farms. Farmers prepare their land by cultivating the soil. Once ready, sugar setts (cuttings from mature cane stalks) are planted. These setts are cultivated for 10 to 18 months. When mature, the sugar cane is harvested using mechanical harvesters. Our Australian Sugar suppliers refine and markets a range of crystal sugars for the industrial and consumer markets. Our range of industrial crystal sugars includes: Manufacturers' White Sugar, Premium White Sugar, Graded White Sugar, Caster Sugar, Extra Coarse White Sugar, Brown and Dark Brown Sugar, Raw Sugar and Icing Sugars. Our range of consumer crystal sugars includes White Sugar, Caster Sugar, Brown and Dark Brown Sugar, Raw Sugar, Coffee Crystals, Demerara and a variety of icing sugars. We offer a full range of liquid sugars that are used widely in industry. Liquid sugar is taken from the refining process prior to crystallisation or can be made by dissolving white sugar in treated water and provides our customers with a convenient source of sugar for producing beverage or food products. |
